Boston finished in last place in the American League East in 2022 with a 78-84 record but with many new faces coming. It was his call, and while he may have gotten it wrong this time around, he set the tone this entire season and arguably has the team playing above the sum of its parts. The Boston Red Sox struggled in 2022, but there is optimism heading into 2023. Hindsight is 20/20 in this case, and Cora is too good of a manager to second guess on a consistent basis. I would've left Houck in and tried to limit the bullpen as much as possible.- BoSox Injection August 17, 2021 This is on the pitchers imo- OverTheMonster August 17, 2021 Whitlock and Taylor just have to be better. Houck struggles 3rd time through, and it's a 7-inning game. Bullshit managing, idc if the 4th is viewed like the 6th-7th- Matt // SN August 17, 2021Ĭora's going to get some criticism for taking out Houck, and I get it, but I thought it was the right move. Tanner Houck isn’t a baby, you don’t take him out after 4 innings. Let Tanner Houck pitch please- Steven Carlberg August 17, 2021 Inevitable bullpen implosion.- Joe M August 17, 2021

That blew up.- Pete Abraham August 17, 2021ĬORA IS A GOOD MANAGER BUT HE DID US A HUGE FAVOR LIFTING THAT HOUCK KID OUT AFTER 4 INNINGS!!- Big Nick Turturro August 17, 2021Ĭora’s management of the rotation/bullpen is maddening. They didn't want him seeing the lineup a third time. He's thrown 80+ pitches three times this season, and wasn't even at 60 today.- Gabrielle Starr August 17, 2021

Still not sure why Cora even pulled Houck so early. Houck can/will be a stud for the Sox… just need to take the training wheels off.- Will Middlebrooks August 17, 2021 Right call, wrong result.- Jared Carrabis August 17, 2021 They just happened to shit the bed today. Both Whitlock and Taylor have been great. Because of the Red Sox’ 11-20 start, the American League East is likely out of reach for them this season as the Yankees are 49-17 and hold a 13.5-game lead following Sunday’s games. The numbers are not good when Houck sees a lineup for a third time. People are complaining about Cora giving Houck the quick hook and that's just hindsight being 20/20. It’s easy to play revisionist history after the Yankees took the lead, but even in the moment, it seemed odd that Cora chose to go to one of his best relief pitchers when Houck wasn’t in trouble. Boston Red Sox fans unhappy Alex Cora pulled Tanner Houck Through four innings, he was starting to find his form, giving up just five hits and two runs despite a rocky start. Houck had been pitching quite well in the Bronx. Whitlock is one of the best pitchers the Boston bullpen has to offer, and if Cora is truly treating this like a playoff game (he is), then having a quick hook isn’t necessarily all that controversial of a decision. The Red Sox went from up a run to down several very quickly, especially with the performances of Garrett Whitlock and Josh Taylor. ( Tara Sullivan Boston Globe)ĭerek Holland was added this winter as pitching depth, but he’s opted out of his minor-league deal.Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora is under fire for pulling starter Tanner Houck in favor of the bullpen. ( John Tomase NBC Sports Boston)īoston’s lineup is not about to get a bunch of sympathy, nor should they, but they are not fans of the new layout of Camden Yards. John Tomase writes that it’s time to take a closer look at Christian Vázquez’s role on this team. Martinez at the end of Sunday’s game, which the team hopes can catapult them forward. If you’re looking for a sliver of hope, Boston did get a grand slam from J.D. ( Jason Mastrodonato Boston Herald)Īlex Cora and company are trying to figure out what the heck is going on with this lineup, which certainly gets the bulk of the blame for this start. It’s tempting to say that this is rock bottom for this Red Sox team, but, well, let’s just say they better hope it actually is rock bottom.
#ALEC KIERNAN RED SOX NEWS SERIES#
( Chris Cotillo Masslive)Īs a whole the entire road trip Boston was on to finish the month of April was bad, but things only got worse over the weekend, and especially in the series finale on Sunday.

Things aren’t about to get any easier, either. They finished off the month (and started May) in the worst possible way, dropping two of three in Baltimore to the lowly Orioles. The Red Sox had a terrible month of April.
